Reflector on: Energon Prowl
Unlike the Armada line, the Energon line was full of reimagined G1 characters.
Prowl is a good example, as his toy design takes inspiration from some interesting sources.
- Energon Blurr?
Early prototypes of Enregon Prowl feature a head that is reminiscent of Armada Blurr (which was almost completely not related to G1 Blurr)..
The exhaust pipes as "ears" are a common element that fuels our hypothesis.
Why was Energon Blurr turned into Energon Prowl? Maybe because the Armada character was not popular enough, or it simply didn't fit the "Police" theme of the new version.
The face sculpt was changed but the "ears" stayed, as they were a key detail of the alt mode.
- Another Red Alert
Energon Prowl is featured in the animated series as a rookie, but his bio qualifies him as "security chief", fundamentally paranoid and unable to trust any of his teammates.
This profile matches G1 Red Alert's, and Red Alert happens to be the name of the Japanese version of Energon Prowl (Superlink Red Alert).
The name could not "cross the Pacific", because it was already taken by Armada Red Alert (the physician), but at least Energon Prowl features an alt mode which is really connected to his G1 namesake.
-Police and F1
Why is a F1 racing car used as a Police car?
For no reason, but there's an interesting coincidence that should be noticed: Machine Wars Prowl (a repaint of his teammate Machine Wars Mirage) features a F1 racing car alt mode!
Being a Police Racing Car, Energon Prowl brings his legacy to full circle.
-Prowl 2, the revenge
The blue-based colors scheme is apparently new, but not completely unrelated to Prowl.
Blue are two versions of Prowl in the Robot In Disguise line: Spychanger Prowl 2 and "Super" deluxe class Prowl.
Blue is also the color scheme of Binal Tech Prowl, who in the related fiction is known as "Prowl 2", and is bound to become Transmetal 2 Prowl of the Beast Wars line.
